Wilbur and Orville Wright were American aviation pioneers who together invented, built, and flew the world's first successful powered, heavier-than-air aircraft. Working from their Dayton, Ohio bicycle shop, they devised the three-axis flight control system that made fixed-wing flight controllable, and on 17 December 1903 they conducted the first sustained, powered flight at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Their patents and subsequent demonstration flights in Europe in 1908 inaugurated the worldwide development of practical aviation.
