William Tecumseh Sherman was a U.S. Army general in the Union Army during the American Civil War whose campaigns broke the Confederacy's capacity to wage war. His 1864 Atlanta Campaign and subsequent March to the Sea destroyed the South's industrial and logistical infrastructure across Georgia and the Carolinas, hastening the war's end. After the war he served as the Commanding General of the Army from 1869 to 1883 and famously refused all entreaties to run for the presidency.
