Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale served as the 42nd vice president of the United States from 1977 to 1981 under President Jimmy Carter, and represented Minnesota in the U.S. Senate from 1964 to 1976. The Democratic nominee in the 1984 presidential election, he made history by selecting Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate—the first woman on a major U.S. party's presidential ticket. He later served as U.S. ambassador to Japan from 1993 to 1996.
