Adeline Virginia Woolf was an English writer and one of the most influential modernist authors of the 20th century, whose novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and The Waves (1931) helped pioneer stream-of-consciousness narration in English. As a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group and co-founder of the Hogarth Press, she shaped a generation of British modernist publishing. Her 1929 essay A Room of One's Own remains a foundational text of feminist literary criticism, and she continued writing through bouts of debilitating mental illness until her suicide in March 1941.
