Thomas Andrew Daschle is an American politician and lobbyist who represented South Dakota in the U.S. Senate from 1987 to 2005 and led the Senate Democratic Caucus for 10 years, including time as both Majority and Minority Leader. After leaving the Senate he was nominated by President Barack Obama as Secretary of Health and Human Services but withdrew his name in February 2009 after disclosure that he had failed to pay more than $128,000 in federal income taxes on personal use of a chauffeured car provided by a private equity firm where he was a paid consultant. He has continued to work as a high-paid healthcare-industry lobbyist.
