Timothy James Pawlenty is an American politician and lobbyist who served as the 39th governor of Minnesota from 2003 to 2011. As governor he vetoed a 2009 bill that would have legalized same-sex marriage in Minnesota and pushed budget cuts that drew sustained criticism from Democrats and the courts, while ultimately leaving the state with one of the largest deficits in its history. After his short-lived 2012 presidential bid he became a financial-industry lobbyist as president of the Financial Services Roundtable from 2012 to 2017.
