Sun Yat-sen was a Chinese revolutionary who founded the Republic of China and the Kuomintang, leading the 1911 Revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty after more than two millennia of imperial rule. He served as the first provisional president of the Republic in 1912 and articulated the Three Principles of the People—nationalism, democracy, and people's livelihood—which became foundational to modern Chinese political thought. Revered across both the People's Republic and Taiwan as the founding father of modern China, he died in 1925 before his vision of a unified republic could be realized.
