Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was a Confederate general who served as one of Robert E. Lee's principal subordinates in the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 until his death after the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863. A career U.S. Army officer turned defender of the slaveholding South, his decisive flanking maneuver at Chancellorsville produced one of the Confederacy's most lopsided victories of the Civil War. He was struck by friendly fire from his own troops while reconnoitering the field at night and died eight days later of pneumonia complicating his surgery.
