Spiro Theodore Agnew was the 39th vice president of the United States, serving under Richard Nixon from 1969 until his October 1973 resignation as part of a plea deal that allowed him to avoid prison time on tax evasion charges and bribery accusations dating to his time as Maryland's governor. Federal prosecutors had documented that he had taken cash bribes from contractors in his Baltimore County executive's office and continued accepting payments in cash envelopes inside the White House. He left office on the same day he pleaded no contest to a single tax-evasion charge.
