Shelton Jackson "Spike" Lee is an American filmmaker and actor whose work has consistently engaged race, urban life, media, and political power, beginning with She's Gotta Have It (1986) and continuing through Do the Right Thing (1989), Malcolm X (1992), 25th Hour, Inside Man, and BlacKkKlansman (2018). His films have received numerous Academy Award nominations, with BlacKkKlansman winning Best Adapted Screenplay; he received an Academy Honorary Award in 2015 for his contributions to cinema. He has also been a longtime professor of film at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
