Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor regarded as one of the finest pianists of his time and one of the last great representatives of late Romantic Russian music. His Second and Third Piano Concertos, Symphony No. 2, the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and the All-Night Vigil are central to the late-Romantic concert repertoire. After fleeing the Russian Revolution in 1917, he spent the second half of his life touring as a concert pianist in Europe and the United States.
