Sarah Louise Palin is an American politician who served as the ninth governor of Alaska from 2006 until her 2009 resignation, and was the Republican Party's 2008 vice presidential nominee on the ticket with John McCain. Her national candidacy is widely credited as a key precursor of the populist style and conspiracy-theory politics that came to dominate the Republican Party in the following decade. In 2011 her political action committee circulated a map placing crosshairs over Democratic House districts, including that of Representative Gabby Giffords, who was shot at a constituent meeting weeks later in an attack that killed six people.
