Sandra Day O'Connor was an American attorney and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1981 to 2006, becoming the first woman to sit on the Court. A pragmatic conservative often considered the Court's swing vote, she authored or joined pivotal opinions on abortion (Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 1992), affirmative action (Grutter v. Bollinger, 2003), and the resolution of the 2000 presidential election (Bush v. Gore). She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 from President Obama.
