Samuel Anthony Alito Jr. is an American jurist who has served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court since 2006. He is the author of the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization majority opinion that overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal constitutional right to abortion that had stood for nearly half a century. In 2024 reporting documented that flags associated with the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol—an upside-down American flag and an "Appeal to Heaven" flag—had flown at his Virginia and New Jersey homes, drawing widespread calls for his recusal from related Supreme Court cases that he has refused.
