Saddam Hussein was an Iraqi dictator who served as the 5th president of Iraq from 1979 until his overthrow during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. His government waged the eight-year Iran-Iraq War, killed an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 Kurds in the 1988 Anfal Campaign that included the chemical-weapons attack on Halabja, invaded Kuwait in 1990, and operated mass-execution and torture facilities including the Abu Ghraib prison. Captured by U.S. forces in December 2003, he was tried by an Iraqi tribunal for crimes against humanity and hanged in December 2006.
