James Richard Perry is an American politician who served as the 47th and longest-tenured governor of Texas from 2000 to 2015 and as the 14th U.S. Secretary of Energy from 2017 to 2019. As governor he presided over the execution of Cameron Todd Willingham in 2004 despite emerging arson-science evidence that the fire that killed Willingham's children had been accidental, and replaced state forensic-commission members poised to review the case. As a 2012 presidential candidate he memorably forgot the third federal department he proposed to eliminate—the Department of Energy—the same agency he later led.
