Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States whose tenure ended in disgrace when the Watergate scandal—a criminal conspiracy involving burglary, wiretapping, and obstruction of justice—forced him to become the only president to resign from office. He secretly ordered the bombing of Cambodia and military incursions into Laos while publicly claiming to reduce American involvement in Vietnam, deliberately deceiving Congress and the public about the war's expansion. His administration also maintained an explicit "enemies list" and weaponized federal agencies to harass, surveil, and punish political opponents and journalists through tax audits and covert operations.
