Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance whose work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and serene neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. With Leonardo and Michelangelo he formed the trio at the heart of the High Renaissance, and his Vatican Stanze frescoes—including The School of Athens (1511)—remain among the most influential works in Western art. He died on his 37th birthday in 1520, leaving an enormous workshop and an outsized legacy.
