Rachel Carson
1907 – 1964
dead
Rachel Louise Carson was an American marine biologist and conservationist whose 1962 book Silent Spring documented the ecological devastation caused by synthetic pesticides—particularly DDT—and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The chemical industry mounted a sustained personal campaign to discredit her, but her testimony to Congress in 1963 led to a presidential review that confirmed her findings and ultimately to the 1972 U.S. ban on DDT. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980 for her contributions to environmental science.
