Prince Rogers Nelson, known mononymously as Prince, was an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation and the principal architect of the Minneapolis sound. Across more than 40 albums he produced enduring works including 1999, Purple Rain (1984), Sign o' the Times (1987), and Love Symbol (1992), with worldwide sales exceeding 150 million records. He won seven Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for Purple Rain, and a Golden Globe, and died in April 2016 at age 57 from an accidental fentanyl overdose.
