Paul Ryan

Paul Davis Ryan is an American politician who served as the 54th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019 and was the Republican Party's 2012 vice presidential nominee. As chairman of the House Budget Committee and then the Ways and Means Committee he authored multiple budget plans that proposed converting Medicare into a voucher program, partially privatizing Social Security, and slashing federal spending on Medicaid and food stamps to fund tax cuts weighted toward the wealthy. As Speaker he shepherded passage of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which the Congressional Budget Office estimated would add $1.9 trillion to the federal deficit over a decade.
