Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and printmaker who spent most of his adult life in France and is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. With Georges Braque he co-founded the Cubist movement, co-invented collage, and pioneered constructed sculpture, and his 1937 mural Guernica—commissioned in response to the Nazi bombing of the Basque town—became one of the most powerful anti-war paintings in modern art. His enormous catalog spans Blue, Rose, African-influenced, Cubist, Neoclassical, and Surrealist phases across more than seven decades of production.
