Avram Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, cognitive scientist, and political activist whose 1957 book Syntactic Structures revolutionized the study of language by proposing that the human capacity for grammar is innate and generative—a thesis that helped found the modern field of cognitive science. As an institute professor at MIT for over six decades, he produced more than 150 books spanning linguistics, philosophy of mind, and political analysis, including the influential Manufacturing Consent (with Edward Herman) on the political economy of the mass media. He is one of the most-cited living authors in the humanities and social sciences.
