Newt Gingrich is an American politician who, as 50th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, became the first speaker to be formally reprimanded and fined by the chamber for ethics violations involving false statements to investigators and misuse of tax-exempt funds. He presided over two major federal government shutdowns and resigned from Congress in 1999 amid significant Republican election losses and mounting internal party opposition.
