Neville Chamberlain
1869 – 1940
dead
Arthur Neville Chamberlain was a British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 1937 to May 1940 and is most remembered for his policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany. He signed the Munich Agreement on September 30, 1938, conceding the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia to Adolf Hitler in exchange for what he called "peace for our time," only to see Germany occupy the rest of Czechoslovakia within six months and invade Poland in September 1939. His government was forced from office in May 1940 after the disastrous Norwegian Campaign, and he died of bowel cancer six months later.
