Nadia Elena Comăneci is a Romanian retired gymnast who at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, aged 14, became the first gymnast in Olympic history to be awarded a perfect score of 10.0—a feat she repeated six more times at the same Games on her way to three gold medals. She added two more golds at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, finishing her Olympic career as a five-time gold medalist. She defected to the United States in 1989 weeks before the fall of the Ceaușescu regime in Romania.
