Miles Dewey Davis III was an American trumpeter, bandleader, and composer who stood at the forefront of nearly every major stylistic development in jazz across his five-decade career, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. His landmark albums Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, In a Silent Way, and Bitches Brew each redefined the genre's possibilities; Kind of Blue remains the best-selling jazz album of all time. He won nine Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
