Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance whose work has had an unrivaled influence on the development of Western art. He carved the Pietà and David in his twenties, painted the ceiling and Last Judgment of the Sistine Chapel between 1508 and 1541, and designed the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The astonishing range and quantity of his surviving work made him the first Western artist to be the subject of major biographies during his own lifetime.
