Maximilian I was Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 to 1519, and a key architect of Habsburg dynastic power across late-medieval Europe. His marriage and inheritance strategies—including marrying his children and grandchildren into the ruling houses of Spain, Hungary, and Bohemia—produced the multi-continent empire his grandson Charles V would inherit, and underwrote the Spanish funding of the conquistadors. His own decades of warfare, particularly against France in the Italian Wars, drained imperial resources and built his political reputation on aggressive military adventurism.
