Marie Antoinette was Queen of France as the wife of Louis XVI from 1774 until the abolition of the French monarchy in 1792, having arrived from the Habsburg court in Vienna at the age of 14. Her extravagant personal spending and influence over royal appointments became one of the most prominent grievances against the Bourbon court in the run-up to the French Revolution, and her secret efforts to coordinate Austrian and Prussian intervention against the Revolution in 1791 and 1792 confirmed her opponents' suspicions of treason. She was tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal and beheaded by guillotine on 16 October 1793, nine months after her husband.
