Mahmoud Abbas

Mahmoud Abbas is a Palestinian politician who has served as president of the Palestinian National Authority since 2005 and as chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization since 2004. His four-year presidential term expired in 2009 but he has remained in office without holding new elections for more than a decade and a half, while Palestinian Authority security forces have repeatedly cooperated with Israeli operations against political opponents in the West Bank. Under his tenure the West Bank has been steadily eroded by Israeli settlement expansion while his Fatah movement and Hamas have remained politically estranged.
