Lev Davidovich Trotsky, born Bronstein, was a Russian revolutionary and Soviet politician who served as Lenin's commissar for war and built the Red Army that won the Russian Civil War. As founder and first head of the Cheka-allied Revolutionary Military Committee he ordered the suppression of the 1921 Kronstadt rebellion in which thousands of sailors and civilians demanding democratic reforms were killed. After losing the post-Lenin succession struggle to Stalin he was expelled from the Communist Party and eventually exiled, and was assassinated by a Stalinist agent with an ice axe at his home in Coyoacán, Mexico, in August 1940.
