Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, firing upon his motorcade from a concealed position in Dallas. Earlier that year, he attempted to assassinate retired General Edwin Walker, and had previously defected to the Soviet Union. He also murdered Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit on the same day as Kennedy’s assassination, and was killed two days later while in police custody, precluding any trial for his crimes.
