Kyrsten Lea Sinema is an American politician and former social worker who served as a U.S. senator from Arizona from 2019 to 2025, leaving the Democratic Party to become an independent in late 2022. After campaigning for the Senate as a progressive, she joined Joe Manchin in repeatedly blocking carve-outs to the filibuster that would have allowed federal voting-rights and union-protection bills to pass with a simple majority, and famously voted against a $15 minimum wage with a curtsying thumbs-down on the Senate floor. She did not seek re-election in 2024 and has since become a corporate consultant.
