Kevin Owen McCarthy is an American politician who served briefly as the 55th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from January to October 2023, before becoming the first Speaker in U.S. history removed from the office by a vote of his own chamber. To win the gavel he had endured fifteen rounds of voting and made sweeping concessions to the Freedom Caucus, including granting Tucker Carlson exclusive access to security footage of the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Two months earlier he had blamed Trump on the House floor for the violence; days later he had flown to Mar-a-Lago to publicly reconcile.
