Joshua David Hawley is an American politician and attorney who has served as a U.S. senator from Missouri since 2019. On January 6, 2021, hours before insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol, he raised a clenched fist in solidarity to crowds gathered outside the building, then later that day and into the following night joined Senate Republican objections to certifying Joe Biden's electoral victory. Photographs and footage from the day showed him fleeing through the Capitol after the breach, becoming an enduring image of the day. He has continued to push election-fraud conspiracies and to be a leading Senate voice against media platforms and pandemic public-health measures.
