John Glover Roberts Jr. is an American jurist who has served since 2005 as the 17th Chief Justice of the United States. He authored the 2013 Shelby County v. Holder majority opinion gutting the preclearance enforcement mechanism of the Voting Rights Act, the 2010 Citizens United concurrence opening the floodgates to unlimited corporate political spending, and the 2024 Trump v. United States opinion granting presidents broad immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts. Despite occasional efforts to position himself as an institutional moderate, his Court has overseen the most rapid conservative reshaping of American constitutional law since the 1930s.
