John James Conyers Jr. was an American politician who represented Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1965 to 2017, becoming the longest-serving African American member of Congress in history. He resigned in December 2017 after multiple former staff members publicly accused him of sexual harassment and after BuzzFeed News revealed that he had used $27,000 in taxpayer funds to settle a 2015 sexual-harassment complaint by a former staffer. He had earlier built a long civil-rights record, including chairing the House Judiciary Committee and authoring the bill to establish the federal Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
