John Robert Bolton II is an American attorney and former diplomat who served as the 25th U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 2005 to 2006 and as the 26th national security advisor from 2018 to 2019. A persistent advocate for U.S. military action against Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela across more than three decades, he played a key role in advancing the false intelligence narrative used to justify the 2003 invasion of Iraq while serving as undersecretary of state for arms control. He has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump since being forced out of the White House, recounting in his 2020 memoir how Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping for help in his re-election.
