Johannes Brahms was a German composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period whose four symphonies, four concertos, and German Requiem extended Beethoven's symphonic tradition into the late 19th century. A protégé of Robert and Clara Schumann, he combined rigorous classical structure with rhythmic vitality and rich harmonic invention, becoming one of the principal conservative voices in the era's so-called War of the Romantics against the Wagner camp. His chamber music and lieder remain core repertoire for performers more than a century after his death.
