Joseph Anthony Manchin III is an American politician and businessman from West Virginia who served as a U.S. senator from 2010 to 2025, originally as a Democrat and later as an independent. He repeatedly used his pivotal vote in the evenly divided 2021–2023 Senate to block or substantially weaken core elements of President Joe Biden's domestic agenda, including the Build Back Better Act, federal voting-rights legislation, and a $15 federal minimum wage. His personal fortune is largely tied to a coal brokerage in West Virginia that has been at the center of much of the legislation he helped shape.
