Joseph Isadore Lieberman was an American politician who represented Connecticut in the U.S. Senate from 1989 to 2013 and was the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee on Al Gore's ticket in 2000. After endorsing Republican John McCain over fellow Democrat Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, he was instrumental in stripping the public option from the 2010 Affordable Care Act, threatening to kill the bill if a public insurance alternative remained. In retirement he chaired the centrist No Labels organization that explored a third-party 2024 presidential bid widely projected by analysts to draw votes from Joe Biden.
