Joseph Michael Arpaio is an American former law-enforcement officer who served as Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona from 1993 to 2017 and built a national profile as "America's Toughest Sheriff" through aggressive immigration sweeps and a tent-city outdoor jail in 100-degree-plus desert heat. In 2017 he was found guilty of criminal contempt of court for defying a federal judge's order to stop racially profiling Latinos in his patrols, the first conviction of his kind in the nation. President Donald Trump pardoned him weeks later.
