James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter who, in a four-year mainstream career, redefined the electric guitar as a lead instrument and is widely regarded as the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music. His three studio albums with the Jimi Hendrix Experience—Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland—and his iconic 1969 Woodstock performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" stand as defining works of the late 1960s. He died in London at age 27 in September 1970 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
