James Francis Thorpe was an American athlete and citizen of the Sac and Fox Nation widely regarded as one of the most versatile sports figures in history, playing at the highest level of football, baseball, and basketball. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics he won gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon, only to have them stripped on a technicality—he had played a summer of semi-pro baseball—a decision the IOC reversed posthumously, finally restoring him as the sole champion in both events in 2022. He was an inaugural member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the first president of the league that became the NFL.
