alive
Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III is an American politician who served as the 84th U.S. Attorney General from 2017 to 2018 after representing Alabama in the U.S. Senate from 1997 to 2017. As attorney general he reinstated the federal pursuit of mandatory-minimum drug sentences that the Obama administration had been winding down, ended Justice Department oversight of police departments accused of civil-rights violations, and personally implemented the family-separation policy at the southern border. He had earlier been rejected for a federal judgeship in 1986 over his record on race, including allegations he had referred to civil-rights organizations as "un-American."
