James Joseph Brown was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and bandleader regarded as the principal architect of funk and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Across a career of more than 50 years he produced foundational recordings including "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Cold Sweat," and "Say It Loud—I'm Black and I'm Proud," pioneering rhythmic and vocal techniques that shaped soul, funk, disco, and hip-hop. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class in 1986.
