Hubert Horatio Humphrey Jr. served as the 38th vice president of the United States from 1965 to 1969 and represented Minnesota in the U.S. Senate from 1949 to 1964 and again from 1971 to 1978. A leading liberal of his era, he delivered the historic 1948 Democratic National Convention speech that committed the party to civil rights for the first time, helping trigger the Dixiecrat walkout. He was the Democratic nominee for president in 1968.
