Howard Carter

1874 – 1939

Howard Carter was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist who in November 1922 discovered the intact tomb of the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, the most complete ancient Egyptian royal burial ever found. His decade-long excavation and meticulous cataloguing of the more than 5,000 objects within the tomb transformed the public perception of ancient Egypt and remains the foundational work of modern Egyptology. The find captured global imagination and established the methodological standards by which subsequent archaeological discoveries have been measured.
