Hideki Tojo was a Japanese general and politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan from 1941 to 1944 during the Pacific War. As prime minister he authorized the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and oversaw the Japanese Imperial Army's conduct across China, Korea, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia, including the systematic enslavement of "comfort women" and the Bataan Death March. After Japan's surrender he attempted suicide in 1945; he was nursed back to health, tried as a war criminal at the Tokyo Trials, and hanged in December 1948.
